Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the second annual cultural seminar in remembrance of Ibadi scholar Sheikh Salim b. Yaʿqūb (d.1991) in Houmt Souk, Djerba. His grandson, Dr. Naji b. Yaqub, founded a cultural association in his name (l'Association Culturelle Cheikh Salim) and it was this organization that put together the event and invited  academics, poets, and personal friends of the late Sheikh Salim to present. The event was recorded and so I suspect it will eventually make its way onto the internet. Following the seminar, the attendees gathered at the Bin Yaʿqūb manzil (farm) in the village of Guizen, to visit Sheikh Sālim b. Yaʿqūb's personal library of manuscript and rare printed books. In addition to the photo here, you can see photos on the association's Facebook page. Interestingly, this library was not included in the survey of libraries published by the island's cultural association a couple of decades ago (see post below). While during Sheikh Salim's lifetime the library was often visited by Arab and European researchers, since his death the library has remained closed. Currently, however, there are at least two projects in the planning stages to find funding in order to catalog the manuscript collection and purchase conservation equipment to preserve this impressive collection of books for future generations. While the number of manuscripts is not known for certain, I counted at least 200 works in the cabinet in this photo and there are hundreds more scattered throughout the room. Most impressively, the vast majority of these works are probably in his own hand, having been copied during his time in Cairo.

 بعد نهاية الملتقى، اجتمع الحاضرون والمشاركون في منزل بن يعقوب في قرية غيزن لكي يزوروا مكتبة الشيخ سالم بن يعقوب التي توجد فيها مخطوطات وكتب نادرة متعلّقة بالدراسات الإباضية. توجد صور أخرى على موقع الجمعية هنا. أثناء حياة الشيخ المرحوم، هذه المكتبة كانت مفتوحة للزوار والباحثين من العرب والأروبيين ولكنها غُلقت عند وفاته. في الوقت الراهن، هناك مشروعان على الأقل لتمويل فهرسة المكتبة وشراء مواد للحفاظ على المخطوطات والكتب النادرة فيها للأجيال القادمة. مع أنّ عدد المخطوطات غير معروف بتأكيد، أنا حسبت على الأقل ٢٠٠ مخطوط في هذه الخزانة (في الصورة ) وتوجد مخطوطات أخرى في كل مكان في الغرفة. من أعجب الأعجاب أنّ أغلبية المخطوطات هذه نُسخت على يد الشيخ سالم نفسه لما كان يسكن في القاهرة
