Ibadi Related Documents at the Archives Nationales d'Outre Mer |

My recent trip in March to the Archives Nationales d'Outre Mer in Aix-en-Provence [1] France yielded a fascinating collection of documents from the private archive of French Orientalist Roger LeTourneau (1907-1971). The "Fond LeTourneau" [APOM7/1-29] is made up of 29 cartons of personal papers, notes, letters, and other documents donated to the archives following LeTourneau's death [2]. Once I finish arranging my notes, I intend to upload a copy of my inventory of all 29 cartons for the benefit of others.

For now, I just wanted to quickly mention that in addition to his monumental work on the history of the city of Fez [3], LeTourneau worked for a time on two important elements of Ibadi history.

Draft of Abū Yazīd art. (in ANOM APOM7/2)
The first, which is the reason for my visit to the archives, was his work on the Kitāb al-sīra wa akhbār al-aʾimma of Abū Zakarīyāʾ al-Wārjalānī (d.11th c.). I'll be dealing with those documents in detail in the dissertation. The second, more unexpected collection of documents relates to his often-cited article on the revolt of Abū Yazīd 'al-Nukkārī' against the Fatimids in the early 10th century. The stages of research for this article, which he ultimately published in Les Cahiers de Tunisie in 1953 [4], can be followed step by step in his personal archive [see photo]. As someone currently in the process of conducting research and writing, I found it fascinating to watch as LeTourneau researched, edited, and revised this study from beginning to end. The second photo is a stack of his lecture notes for his course on medieval Islamic North Africa that he offered at the University of Aix following his move there from Algeria.

Barouni Manuscript Library, a Livre d'Or | المكتبة البارونية: كتاب التسجيل

I apologize for the delay in posting. A family emergency brought me back to the U.S. for February and I am still catching up.

This is a quick post to show an example of a fascinating element of manuscript libraries: their guestbooks. I am far from the first researcher to be interested in Ibadi manuscripts or to visit private libraries like the Salim b. Ya'qub library or the Barouniyya in Djerba. In both cases, the owners of these libraries have kept a record of those guests and researchers who have come to library to see their collections. These livres d'or (guestbooks), are witnesses to the last several decades of research in Ibadi North African history. I decided to post an example. This note comes from the livre d'or of the Barouniyya library in Djerba and the hand is that of the late Libyan historian 'Amr Ennami in 1968, who did more than any other author in the 20th century to introduce Ibadi Islam and Ibadi manuscripts to English-speaking audiences in his Studies in Ibadism (1972).

Finally, I can't help but think about the possibility of studying these guestbooks as a way of mapping the network of modern historians of Ibadism!

Cheikh Salim Seminar in Djerba & the Salim b. Yaʿqūb Library |

Dr. Nājī b. Yaʿqūb in front of the Sheikh Salim Library
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the second annual cultural seminar in remembrance of Ibadi scholar Sheikh Salim b. Yaʿqūb (d.1991) in Houmt Souk, Djerba. His grandson, Dr. Naji b. Yaqub, founded a cultural association in his name (l'Association Culturelle Cheikh Salim) and it was this organization that put together the event and invited  academics, poets, and personal friends of the late Sheikh Salim to present. The event was recorded and so I suspect it will eventually make its way onto the internet. For the time being however, the event program can be found on the association's Facebook page:

Following the seminar, the attendees gathered at the Bin Yaʿqūb manzil (farm) in the village of Guizen, to visit Sheikh Sālim b. Yaʿqūb's personal library of manuscript and rare printed books. In addition to the photo here, you can see photos on the association's Facebook page. Interestingly, this library was not included in the survey of libraries published by the island's cultural association a couple of decades ago (see post below). While during Sheikh Salim's lifetime the library was often visited by Arab and European researchers, since his death the library has remained closed. Currently, however, there are at least two projects in the planning stages to find funding in order to catalog the manuscript collection and purchase conservation equipment to preserve this impressive collection of books for future generations. While the number of manuscripts is not known for certain, I counted at least 200 works in the cabinet in this photo and there are hundreds more scattered throughout the room. Most impressively, the vast majority of these works are probably in his own hand, having been copied during his time in Cairo.

Ibadi MSS at the Univ. of Naples "L'Orientale" |

I apologize for the delay in posting. It actually had nothing to do with the holiday season but was rather due to a trip to Algiers this month during which I had limited access to the internet. That trip yielded a handful of interesting things and I hope to gather my notes together and write a post about it, too. Right now, however, I wanted to talk about a recent trip I took to Naples (Italy) in November to take a look at the handful of Ibadi manuscripts in the university library's collection used by Italian Orientalist Roberto Rubinacci in 1948 [1]. Surprisingly, no one has gone back since then to take a look at these manuscripts. I was there to write up some codicological descriptions of three of them for the dissertation, but actually discovered that the library holds a handful of manuscripts not mentioned by Rubinacci [2]. They all appear to be from the same place in Tripolitania, Libya. With the help of the librarian at the university, I am currently writing an article in which I hope to include descriptions of each of the new manuscripts (including watermarks) for the use of other researchers, as well as a description of the recent efforts to restore these and other manuscripts in the university’s collection. Briefly, however, I thought I would add the list of the Ibadi manuscripts not mentioned by Rubinacci that I had a chance to examine:

(1)  MS ARA [No shelfmark]; “Fiqh Ibāḍite” (titled from the paper sleeve in which the fragment is stored); Author unknown; 3 folios; 18th c.(?); contains a handful of responsa and a poem
(2)  MS ARA 50; Kitāb al-waḍʿa; Abū Zak. Yaʿqūb b. al-Khayr b. Abī al-Khayr al-Jannāwanī; 157 folios; late 17th c.; Ibadi fiqh
(3)  MS ARA 71; Composite containing Kitāb al-shafaʿ, Kitāb al-hiba; Kitāb al-waṣāya; Abū Sākin ʿĀmir b. ʿAlī al-Shammākhī; 56 folios; 18th c.; Ibadi fiqh
(4)  MS ARA 259; Mukhtaṣir al-ḥiṣāl; attributed to Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm b. Qays; unknown number of folios [due to fragility of MS, I was unable to count them]; Ibadi fiqh

Rubinacci actually did provide a brief description of this last manuscript but neglected to mention that it also contains a few manuscript fragments in Latin (see photo), which I hope to spend some time with and whose contents I hope to determine for the article. At first blush, it looks like a work of theology. Many of the manuscripts also contain handwritten notes (presumably by Rubinacci, although some clearly from the late 20th century) on their contents, as well as page markers. All of this will hopefully make it into the article.

Earlier this month I took a second trip to Djerba to look for additional information on private family libraries on the island. While the Barouni library (see previous post) is the best known and likely the largest on the island, there are still several other family libraries there. I visited the "Association pour la sauvegarde de l'île de Djerba" to look at a catalog of a document exhibition they held in April of 1987. The catalog is in rough shape and my camera battery died before I was able to photograph it (of course). I did not have time to transcribe it so that will have to wait until the next visit. However, I thought I would share the table of contents to give some idea of the number of them on the island:

-List of books in the Jāmiʿ al-Turk (pp.1-3)
-List of the names of manuscript books owned by Yūsuf al-Bārūnī (Ḥashān, Djerba) (pp.4-14)
-List of book owned by ʿUmar b. al-Ḥāj Saʿīd b. Malāʿib (pp.15-17)
-The Baʿṭūrī family Library (p.19-21)

-The al-Ṣāṭūrī family Library (p.22)

As is clear from the photo of the cover shown here, the catalog copy held in the Association's library is incomplete. From the perspective of Ibāḍī manuscripts, the Baʿṭūrī library probably holds the most valuable collection. In addition to the libraries listed here, there are also manuscripts held in the Ibāḍī mosque in al-Māy and the private family library of Sheikh Sālim b. Yaʿqūb. When I have a chance to return to the Association, I hope to photograph this catalog in its entirety and offer it here for download.

This catalog was a reminder of the tremendous wealth of manuscript material held by families throughout North Africa. Understandably, many families are reluctant to relinquish their collections to national libraries or other academic institutions. As a result, however, private individuals are often unable to properly care for these documents for financial reasons.
