A visit to the Mzab

I recently returned from a wonderful visit to the Mzab valley where I had the opportunity to examine some of the rich manuscript libraries of Ghardaia, Benisguen, and Ateuf. While it is difficult to summarize the many collections which I had the chance to visit and the manuscripts which I had the chance to examine, I will say in short (as so many have before me) that this area is really incredible from the perspective of manuscript studies. One of the things that struck me, in particular, is how small and well-organized the modern community of specialists in Ibadi manuscripts turned out to be. I have already received an astounding amount of help and support from the Ibadi communities of the Mzab and for that I am thankful.

al-Darjīnī's K. al-Ṭabaqāt (late 18th c.)
I am now planning a kind of survey-level introduction to the various private libraries (or at least those that have organized and inventoried their collections) for the blog. Should anyone be interested in helping with that, I think it could be a useful resource. Much of the information is out there on the web, it is just scattered and almost exclusively in Arabic.

Two Articles on a Ibadi Networks talk at CEMA in Oran |

I recently had the pleasure of giving a short talk on my dissertation topic (Ibadi networks & siyar literature) at the American Center for Maghrebi Studies (CEMA) in Oran, Algeria on my way back from a visit to the Mzab valley. Two articles (one in French and the other in Arabic) appeared in Algerian newspapers and provide very different but very interesting descriptions of the talk: Liberté (in French) & Annasr (in Arabic).

 Liberté (بالفرنسية) & Annasr (بالعربية)

Disseration Abstract in Arabic Available

A quick note to say that the dissertation abstract has been updated & is now available in Arabic. More to come soon on Ibadi manuscript libraries in Mzab from my most recent trip.

Ibadi Related Documents at the Archives Nationales d'Outre Mer |

My recent trip in March to the Archives Nationales d'Outre Mer in Aix-en-Provence [1] France yielded a fascinating collection of documents from the private archive of French Orientalist Roger LeTourneau (1907-1971). The "Fond LeTourneau" [APOM7/1-29] is made up of 29 cartons of personal papers, notes, letters, and other documents donated to the archives following LeTourneau's death [2]. Once I finish arranging my notes, I intend to upload a copy of my inventory of all 29 cartons for the benefit of others.

For now, I just wanted to quickly mention that in addition to his monumental work on the history of the city of Fez [3], LeTourneau worked for a time on two important elements of Ibadi history.

Draft of Abū Yazīd art. (in ANOM APOM7/2)
The first, which is the reason for my visit to the archives, was his work on the Kitāb al-sīra wa akhbār al-aʾimma of Abū Zakarīyāʾ al-Wārjalānī (d.11th c.). I'll be dealing with those documents in detail in the dissertation. The second, more unexpected collection of documents relates to his often-cited article on the revolt of Abū Yazīd 'al-Nukkārī' against the Fatimids in the early 10th century. The stages of research for this article, which he ultimately published in Les Cahiers de Tunisie in 1953 [4], can be followed step by step in his personal archive [see photo]. As someone currently in the process of conducting research and writing, I found it fascinating to watch as LeTourneau researched, edited, and revised this study from beginning to end. The second photo is a stack of his lecture notes for his course on medieval Islamic North Africa that he offered at the University of Aix following his move there from Algeria.

Barouni Manuscript Library, a Livre d'Or | المكتبة البارونية: كتاب التسجيل

I apologize for the delay in posting. A family emergency brought me back to the U.S. for February and I am still catching up.

This is a quick post to show an example of a fascinating element of manuscript libraries: their guestbooks. I am far from the first researcher to be interested in Ibadi manuscripts or to visit private libraries like the Salim b. Ya'qub library or the Barouniyya in Djerba. In both cases, the owners of these libraries have kept a record of those guests and researchers who have come to library to see their collections. These livres d'or (guestbooks), are witnesses to the last several decades of research in Ibadi North African history. I decided to post an example. This note comes from the livre d'or of the Barouniyya library in Djerba and the hand is that of the late Libyan historian 'Amr Ennami in 1968, who did more than any other author in the 20th century to introduce Ibadi Islam and Ibadi manuscripts to English-speaking audiences in his Studies in Ibadism (1972).

Finally, I can't help but think about the possibility of studying these guestbooks as a way of mapping the network of modern historians of Ibadism!

Cheikh Salim Seminar in Djerba & the Salim b. Yaʿqūb Library |

Dr. Nājī b. Yaʿqūb in front of the Sheikh Salim Library
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the second annual cultural seminar in remembrance of Ibadi scholar Sheikh Salim b. Yaʿqūb (d.1991) in Houmt Souk, Djerba. His grandson, Dr. Naji b. Yaqub, founded a cultural association in his name (l'Association Culturelle Cheikh Salim) and it was this organization that put together the event and invited  academics, poets, and personal friends of the late Sheikh Salim to present. The event was recorded and so I suspect it will eventually make its way onto the internet. For the time being however, the event program can be found on the association's Facebook page:

Following the seminar, the attendees gathered at the Bin Yaʿqūb manzil (farm) in the village of Guizen, to visit Sheikh Sālim b. Yaʿqūb's personal library of manuscript and rare printed books. In addition to the photo here, you can see photos on the association's Facebook page. Interestingly, this library was not included in the survey of libraries published by the island's cultural association a couple of decades ago (see post below). While during Sheikh Salim's lifetime the library was often visited by Arab and European researchers, since his death the library has remained closed. Currently, however, there are at least two projects in the planning stages to find funding in order to catalog the manuscript collection and purchase conservation equipment to preserve this impressive collection of books for future generations. While the number of manuscripts is not known for certain, I counted at least 200 works in the cabinet in this photo and there are hundreds more scattered throughout the room. Most impressively, the vast majority of these works are probably in his own hand, having been copied during his time in Cairo.
